Gallatin County Community Coalition
Our Mission
The Gallatin County Community Coalition is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that seeks to identify issues that impact our environment and spread public awareness by advocating for the health of our rural communities.
We are taking action to protect our environment and the health of our residents so that our land and health is preserved and protected for present and future generations.
Our Focus
Connecting residents with resources and local organizations to help maintain our natural resources and aiding our communities in identifying source pollution concerns
Current Initiative
Water, Air and Public Safety with Commercial Digging in Residential Neighborhoods
In July of 2024, the GCCC launched their water, air and public safety with commercial digging in residential neighborhood initiative. This initiative will represent concerned community members in regards of the approval of Opencut #3561 in and around homes of the Churchill, Manhattan, Amsterdam and Belgrade areas. The GCCC will advocate to appeal the decision by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality to approve the permit for the gravel pit mining operation located near the intersection of Highline and Veltkamp Roads in Manhattan. The concerns are many for this project - the pit will have an impact on water quality and quantity, on health by silica dust and air pollution, on livelihoods by being legally allowed to operate 24/7, and most notably, on the constitutional right to "a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations".
We are seeking donations to address concerns about gravel pit mine Opencut #3561 and the DEQ's approval process environmental review process
In order to meet the legal requirements that the State of Montana has set in place regarding appeals, legal counsel must be retained. There is no path forward without legal counsel; this is our one and only chance to protect our health and our environment. Currently, this is our priority initiative, and 100% of donations will be going to this effort. There's a lot of money in mining operations and we have a big challenge ahead of us, but as individuals we strongly feel it's worth defending our right to keep our roots here in Gallatin County.
